Inputs and Outputs

FieldWhat it means
Hourly rateYour pay per hour, e.g. $20.00. 2 decimal places max.
Annual salaryYour gross yearly pay (used in Salary → Hourly mode).
Hours per weekTypical weekly hours: 35 (part-time), 37.5 (office), 38 (some industries), 40 (full-time). 0.5-168.
Weeks per yearPaid working weeks: 52 (no vacation), 50 (2 weeks off), 48 (4 weeks off).
Annual / Monthly / Bi-weekly / Weekly / Daily payGross figures derived from your inputs. Bi-weekly = every 2 weeks (26/year); semi-monthly = twice a month (24/year) — different!

How to Calculate Hourly to Salary (and Back) Manually

Hourly rate → annual salary

  1. Multiply your hourly rate by your weekly hours — $20 × 40 = $800 per week.
  2. Multiply by your working weeks per year — $800 × 52 = $41,600 per year.
  3. For monthly pay, divide the annual figure by 12 — $41,600 ÷ 12 = $3,466.67.

Quick mental check: multiply your hourly rate by 2,000 — $25 × 2,000 = $50,000 (close to the exact $52,000). The extra 80 hours (2,080 − 2,000) account for two extra weeks.

Annual salary → hourly rate

  1. Multiply weekly hours by weeks per year — 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours per year.
  2. Divide the annual salary by that total — $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 per hour.
Understanding the math: 2,080 hours = 40 hrs/week × 52 weeks (the standard full-time year); 260 working days = 52 weeks × 5 days (weekly pay ÷ 5 = daily pay). Monthly pay is annual ÷ 12 — not 4 weeks' pay (a month averages 4.33 weeks). And bi-weekly (26/year) is not the same as semi-monthly (24/year): $52,000 → $2,000.00 vs $2,166.67.

Salary vs Hourly — Key Differences

DimensionHourlySalaried
OvertimePaid 1.5× for hours over 40/week (non-exempt) — see the Time and a Half CalculatorUsually no overtime (exempt roles)
PredictabilityPay varies with hours workedFixed annual pay, stable week to week
BenefitsOften part-time roles get fewer benefitsTypically full benefits (health, 401(k), PTO)
FlexibilityEasier to adjust schedule or take unpaid timeFixed schedule, PTO must be approved
Legal protectionsFLSA minimum wage & overtime applyExempt rules vary by salary level and duties

Converting a rate does not change the underlying job type — an hourly role converted to "salary" still follows overtime rules based on the actual employment classification.

Worked Examples

JOB OFFER — full-time

$28/hr × 40 hrs × 52 wks = $58,240 a year ($4,853.33/month).

PART-TIME — 25 hrs/week

$18.50/hr × 25 hrs × 52 wks = $24,050 a year ($462.50/week).

SALARY OFFER — converting to hourly

$72,000 ÷ 2,080 hrs = $34.62/hr for comparing against hourly offers.

Who Uses It

  • Job seekers — comparing hourly and salaried offers.
  • Employers & HR — budgeting annual cost of hourly roles.
  • Freelancers & contractors — pricing their time.
  • Students — estimating entry-level earnings.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing gross and take-home pay — this calculator shows gross (before taxes); actual pay is lower ( see FAQ).
  • Using 52 weeks when you take unpaid time off — if you take 2 unpaid weeks, use 50 (or 48 for 4 weeks).
  • Assuming every role is 40 hours — many office roles are 37.5; adjust the hours field.
  • Forgetting overtime — hours beyond 40/week are usually paid at 1.5× (Time and a Half Calculator).
  • Multiplying weekly pay by 4 for monthly — a month averages 4.33 weeks; use annual ÷ 12.
  • Comparing bi-weekly and semi-monthly as the same — 26 vs 24 pay periods per year ( see FAQ).
