How to Calculate Chronological Age Manually
The standard method used in clinical and educational settings is the borrowing method — the same subtraction algorithm published in Pearson assessment manuals. Subtract days, then months, then years. When you need to borrow, take the actual number of days in the previous month (February = 28 or 29 depending on the leap year).
Example: Birth March 15, 2015 — Test September 10, 2024
- Subtract the days: 10 − 15 = −5 → borrow August (31 days): 10 + 31 − 15 = 26 days
- Adjust the months: September (9) − 1 (borrowed) = 8
- Subtract the months: 8 − 3 = 5 months
- Subtract the years: 2024 − 2015 = 9 years
- Result: 9 years, 5 months, 26 days (9;05;26)
Algorithm note: this tool uses the borrowing method (strict day-count) — the Pearson assessment standard. For month-end dates (e.g. a January 31 birthday → February 28), the strict day-count gives 0y 0m 28d; some general-purpose calculators use an end-of-month convention and would show 0y 1m 0d instead. Corrected Age for Premature Infants
Corrected age (adjusted age) = chronological age − weeks born early. For a baby born at 32 weeks (8 weeks early), corrected age subtracts 8 weeks from the calendar age. Enter the gestational age at birth in the calculator — it defaults to 40 weeks (full term), so nothing changes for infants born at term.
Corrected age applies only to premature births — GA below 37 weeks (the WHO/AAP definition). For GA 37-42 (full term / post-term) the calculator shows “Full term — corrected age not applicable” and applies no correction. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends using corrected age for developmental assessments of premature infants up to 24 months of corrected age.
