How to Calculate Age Manually
You can work out any age by hand with three steps. Let's find the age on August 16, 2026 for someone born on January 1, 2000:
- Count whole years — January 1, 2000 to January 1, 2026 is 26 full years (including 7 leap days in 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024).
- Count whole months — January 1 to August 1, 2026 is 7 full months.
- Count the remaining days — August 1 to August 16 is 15 days.
The answer: 26 years, 7 months and 15 days — exactly what this age calculator shows. Age increases on the birthday, and month-end dates clamp to the shorter month (February 28 in non-leap years). Born in 2007? In 2026 you turn 19. Born in 1998? In 2026 you turn 28. The result is always as of the current year.
What Is Chronological Age?
Chronological age is the exact amount of time that has passed since your date of birth, measured in years, months and days. It is the standard age used for registration forms, school enrollment, retirement and social security planning, insurance underwriting, legal documents and genealogy. Unlike biological age (how old your body seems) or cultural age systems (such as Korean age), chronological age is a precise calendar measurement — and this age calculator computes it to the day.
Working in education or clinical assessment? The chronological age calculator gives the report-ready Y;M;D format on the exact test date, plus corrected age for premature infants.
Cultural Age Systems Compared (born June 15, 1990)
| System | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Western (Chronological) | Age increases on the birthday | 35 until June 15, 2026 |
| Korean (Sae-neun-nai) | Born at age 1; +1 on January 1 | 37 for all of 2026 |
| East Asian (Nominal / Xu Sui) | Born at age 1; +1 at Lunar New Year | Depends on the lunar new year date |
| Vietnamese | Born at age 1; +1 at Tết (Lunar New Year) | Depends on the Tết date |
This calculator follows the Western chronological convention (age increases on the birthday). Cultural ages are shown for reference only.
Leap Year Rules (Gregorian Calendar)
A year is a leap year if divisible by 4 — except century years, which must also be divisible by 400.
| Year | ÷ 4 | ÷ 100 | ÷ 400 | Leap? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | ✓ | ✗ | ✗ | ✅ |
| 2025 | ✗ | ✗ | ✗ | ❌ |
| 1900 | ✓ | ✓ | ✗ | ❌ |
| 2000 | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✅ |
Born on February 29? In non-leap years your birthday is treated as February 28 — both for your age and for the countdown. Your next February 29 birthday falls in the next leap year (2028, then 2032).
How to Calculate Age in Excel
Excel's DATEDIF function returns the exact age in years, months and days — the same chronological age this calculator shows. With the birth date in A2 and the target date in B2:
For example, A2 = 2000-01-01 and B2 = 2026-08-16 returns 26y 7m 15d. The "Y" part counts whole years, "YM" the remaining months, and "MD" the remaining days — identical to the Western chronological convention used here.
How the Numbers Are Calculated
- Total days is the exact calendar-day difference (day by day on the Gregorian calendar) — not an average of 30.4375 days per month. This tool is more precise than averaging-based calculators.
- The day you were born counts as day 0: born on January 1, you are 1 day old on January 2.
- Total hours, minutes and seconds assume a date of birth at 00:00 (midnight) and use whole days (total days × 24 / 1440 / 86400).
- The live seconds counter (shown when the target date is today) adds the seconds already passed today, so it continues smoothly from the whole-day total.
When to Use an Age Calculator
- Registration forms — job applications, school forms and insurance quotes that ask for your exact age or date of birth.
- School enrollment — check cutoff ages and kindergarten or grade eligibility.
- Child development — check a child's exact age in years, months and days for pediatric milestones, growth charts and school cutoff dates. Works as an age calculator of child for any birth date.
- Retirement & social security planning — verify your exact age at any future date.
- Insurance underwriting — age on the application date often matters.
- Genealogy — work out ancestors' ages from birth and death dates.
- Birthday cards & family moments — settle "how old is my mom?" arguments in seconds.
Age Calculator — FAQ
How to calculate age from date of birth?
Subtract the birth date from the target date in three steps: count whole years, then whole months, then remaining days. For example, someone born on January 1, 2000 is 26 years, 7 months and 15 days old on August 16, 2026 — 26 full years (including 7 leap days), then 7 full months to August 1, then 15 more days. Age increases on the birthday, and months follow the calendar (month-end dates clamp, e.g. January 31 plus 1 month lands on February 28).
How old am I if I was born in 2007?
Born in 2007? In 2026 (this year) you turn 19 — 2026 minus 2007 is 19, and your birthday is the exact day you cross from 18 to 19. The exact years, months and days depend on your birth date and today's date: use this age calculator and the result shows your precise chronological age.
How many days old am I? / How many days have I been alive?
The day you were born counts as day 0 — the next day you are 1 day old. So from January 1 to January 2 the result is 1 day, not 2. The calculator shows your total days alive (e.g. someone born on January 1, 2000 has been alive for 9,724 days on August 16, 2026), plus the same span in weeks, hours, minutes and seconds.
When is my next birthday?
The result panel shows your next birthday with the exact days remaining and your last birthday with the days since — the when is my birthday answer in one glance. On the birthday itself it highlights "Today is your birthday!". If you were born on February 29, your birthday is treated as February 28 in non-leap years.
How is age calculated when the birthday falls on Feb 29?
Leap-day babies celebrate on February 28 in non-leap years, and this calculator applies the same rule to age: someone born on February 29, 2000 is considered 25 years old on February 28, 2025 (their birthday in that non-leap year), and exactly 24 on February 29, 2024. In a leap year the birthday is February 29 again.
What is chronological age?
Chronological age is the exact amount of time that has passed since your date of birth, measured in years, months and days. It is the standard "Western" age used in forms, school enrollment, retirement, insurance, legal documents and family history. It is different from biological age or cultural ages such as the Korean age system.
How old would I be at a specific date in the future or past?
Set the "Age at the Date of" field to any past or future date — the calculator computes your exact age on that day (e.g. how old was I on this date, or what will my age be at retirement). The result line always shows "Age as of" that target date, so it is never confused with a "today" calculation.
Is this age calculator free and private?
Yes, completely. This free age calculator runs entirely in your browser — all calculations are local-only, your date of birth never leaves your device, nothing is uploaded or stored, and no sign-up is required.
How old is someone born in 1995? How old am I if I was born in 1990?
Subtract the birth year from the current year to get the age before the birthday. For example, someone born in 1995 turns 31 in 2026 (this year) — 2026 minus 1995 is 31 — and their exact years, months and days depend on their birth date. Use this age calculator with any birth year to get the precise chronological age: pick the date of birth, set the target date to today, and read the result.
Disclaimer
Based on the Gregorian calendar; dates before 1582 may not reflect historical calendars. Total hours, minutes and seconds assume a date of birth at 00:00 — the live counter is an approximation for fun. Age calculations follow the Western chronological convention (age increases on the birthday). For planning and estimation only — verify official documents (insurance, retirement, registration) with the relevant authority.
