US Time Zones

The continental US spans four time zones — from East to West: the eastern time zone (EST/EDT), central time zone (CST/CDT), mountain time zone (MST/MDT) and pacific time zone (PST/PDT). New York (Eastern) is 1 hour ahead of Chicago (Central), 2 hours ahead of Denver (Mountain) and 3 hours ahead of Los Angeles (Pacific). Texas, Florida and Tennessee are split between two zones — see the state list below.

Based on current DST rules (US standard time).

City to Time Zone

A quick reference for major cities around the world. Offset pairs show January / July (a city with DST shows both). Sydney and Auckland are on daylight time in January.

How to Convert Time Zones Manually

Every time zone is a fixed offset from UTC, so converting is offset math: take the difference between the two UTC offsets and shift the time.

Example: New York is UTC-5 in winter (EST) and London is UTC±0 (GMT) — a 5 hour difference. 12:00 PM in New York + 5 hours = 5:00 PM in London.

Reading the difference: "London is 5 hours ahead of New York" means the clock in London shows a larger number (17:00 vs 12:00). When it's 23:30 on December 31 in New York, it's already 13:30 on January 1 in Tokyo — the date can change when you cross the International Date Line.

Not all offsets are whole hours: India is UTC+5:30, Nepal UTC+5:45 and Newfoundland UTC-3:30. The converter handles these automatically.

Common Uses

Cross-border meetings

Schedule a US-EU-APAC kickoff: 9:00 AM in New York is 2:00 PM in London and 11:00 PM in Tokyo (during standard time).

Flights across DST

Flights crossing daylight-saving transitions need the exact date — a September flight from New York to Auckland lands a full day later.

Remote team syncs

Distributed teams agree on a daily sync time — check when it lands for everyone before booking the slot.

Support hours & gaming

E-commerce support windows and esports tournaments publish UTC times — convert to local so fans never miss the start.

Who uses it: business travelers, remote teams, expats, customer support and e-commerce operators, gamers and event organizers — anyone who needs to know what time it is somewhere else.

Daylight Saving Time (DST)

Daylight saving time is the practice of setting clocks forward one hour in spring and back in fall to extend evening daylight. About 40% of countries observe it, mostly in Europe and North America — while most of Asia, Africa and South America don't.

US rules: DST starts on the second Sunday of March (clocks jump 2:00 AM → 3:00 AM) and ends on the first Sunday of November. In 2026 that's March 8 and November 1. The UK follows a similar pattern but on different dates (last Sunday of March / last Sunday of October), which is why the London–New York difference can briefly be 4 hours. See the exact dates and a live countdown on the Daylight Savings Time Clock Change page.

This converter handles DST automatically — the offsets above change to EDT, BST, CEST and so on when a region is in daylight time, for any date from 1970 to 2099.

Some regions skip DST entirely: Arizona and Hawaii in the US, and most of Asia (Japan, China, India) — see the time facts on the homepage for more.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert time between time zones?

Choose a From and a To time zone, set a date and time, and the converted time appears instantly. Manually, find the UTC offset difference and shift the time: New York EST is UTC-5 and London GMT is UTC±0, so London is 5 hours ahead of New York in winter.

Does this time zone converter handle daylight saving time?

Yes — automatically. The tool uses your browser’s built-in IANA time zone database (tzdata), so New York shows EST (UTC-5) in January and EDT (UTC-4) in July, with no manual DST switches needed.

What time zone am I in?

The page detects it automatically at the top — "Your time zone: ..." — using your browser’s built-in time zone setting. You can also use the converter below with that time zone as the From zone.

How many hours ahead is London than New York?

Usually 5 hours — GMT vs EST is 5 hours in winter and BST vs EDT is 5 hours in summer. For a few weeks each spring and fall, when the US has switched to daylight saving time but the UK hasn’t yet (or vice versa), the difference is 4 hours.

What is the time difference between New York and Tokyo?

When it’s 12:00 PM in New York it’s 2:00 AM the next day in Tokyo during US standard time (14 hours ahead), and 1:00 AM the next day (13 hours ahead) during US daylight time. Japan observes no DST, so the difference jumps by one hour when the US switches.

What time zone is California in?

California is in Pacific Time: PST (UTC-8) in winter and PDT (UTC-7) in summer. Use America/Los_Angeles as the time zone for California.

What time is it in Indiana?

Indiana spans Eastern and Central time. Most of the state, including Indianapolis, is on Eastern Time (EST/EDT); a group of counties in the far northwest and southwest observes Central Time (CST/CDT). Use the converter below with America/Indiana/Indianapolis as your time zone to get the current Indiana time.

What time is it in Washington state?

Washington state is in Pacific Time: PST (UTC-8) in winter and PDT (UTC-7) in summer. Use the converter below with America/Los_Angeles as your time zone to get the current Washington time.

What time zone is Chicago in?

Chicago is in Central Time: CST (UTC-6) in winter and CDT (UTC-5) in summer.

What time zone is Colorado in?

Colorado is in Mountain Time: MST (UTC-7) in winter and MDT (UTC-6) in summer. Denver and all of Colorado follow Mountain Time year-round except for the DST switch in March and November.

What time zone is Michigan in?

Most of Michigan is in Eastern Time (EST/EDT, UTC-5/UTC-4). Only the four counties of the western Upper Peninsula — Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson and Menominee — are on Central Time (CST/CDT, UTC-6/UTC-5).

What time zone is Florida in?

Almost all of Florida is in Eastern Time (EST/EDT, UTC-5/UTC-4). The exception is the Florida Panhandle west of the Apalachicola River, which is on Central Time (CST/CDT, UTC-6/UTC-5).

What time zone is Texas in?

Most of Texas is in Central Time (CST/CDT, UTC-6/UTC-5). The far west, including the El Paso area, is on Mountain Time (MST/MDT, UTC-7/UTC-6).

What time zone is Arizona in?

Arizona is in Mountain Time (UTC-7) year-round — it does not observe daylight saving time (the Navajo Nation, which does, is the exception).

What time zone is Las Vegas in?

Las Vegas is in Pacific Time: PST (UTC-8) in winter and PDT (UTC-7) in summer.

What is UTC?

UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the global time standard, equivalent to GMT. Every time zone is defined by its offset from UTC — for example, Tokyo is UTC+9. The world clock above shows UTC in real time.

Why are some time zones 30 or 45 minutes?

Historical and political reasons. India is UTC+5:30, Nepal is UTC+5:45 and Newfoundland is UTC-3:30 — offsets that don’t align to whole hours. Time zones aren’t all one hour apart.

Privacy & Accuracy

Privacy: All calculations happen in your browser — no data is sent to any server.

Technical transparency: Time zone and DST rules come from your browser's built-in IANA database (tzdata), updated with your browser. Recent rule changes (e.g. a country dropping DST) may lag on older browsers.

Disclaimer: DST rules can change with government policy (Brazil dropped DST in 2019, Russia adjusted in 2014). This tool is for reference — verify with official sources for flights, contracts or other critical schedules.
